Understanding Heel Spurs: Causes, Symptoms & Ankle Pain

Question
hello, I emailed yesterday about my sore foot, the swelling,  Well, i went to the er and the doctor told me after 6 xrays that i had heel spurs.. He didnt explain what they were. but i dont understand if i dont have pain in the heel and its on the side of my ankle, how it could be heel spurs.. all he told me was to stay off from it and got a shoe for my foot and some kretches.. can you explain to me what heel spurs are and how it is making my ankle sore and swell up.. thanks

Answer
Hi Teresa,
Heel spurs are boney projections from the bottom of the heel.  They occur from constant traction of the tissue on the bottom of the foot where they attach to the heel. The heel spur itself is not the problem but the result of the problem which is the inflammation of the tissue. I find it hard to believe that this would make your ankle sore unless you have adopted an unusual walk to protect the sore foot.
