Severe Digestive Issues: Understanding Symptoms & Potential Causes
QuestionI am writing because I am extremely frustrated and don't know what else to do. Over the past few months I have become very sick: I can't eat w/o it resulting in violent diarrhea, I have upper right quadrant pain which radiates from back to front which is so severe that when I my pain killers wear off I can't move and I cry. There is some blood in my stool, but now I have noticed that the stool has become very pale and smells very bad. I have lost at least five pounds in the past month, I am always exhausted and I have had an fever which goes from normal to 99.6 or 7 for the past few months. My knees and pelvis ache, my hair is falling out. I have had a colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, ultrasound of my abdomen, hida scan, ct scan and all except for the hida came back pretty normal. I had my gall bladder removed via emergency surgery 2 weeks ago, but the problems still persist. Something is definately wrong, but I have no answers and I dont' know what else to do. Also, I am only 20 years old. If you have any advice, please help me. Thanks.
AnswerHi Meg,
Firstly, it is common to have problems with diarrhea and some abdominal pain and cramping after gall bladder surgery. The symptoms that you mentioned sounded immediately like either gall bladder or pancreas. Sounds like the gall bladder is now no longer the problem. I would do the following: start fiber daily; get a product called Lactinex and use it regualarly; Also use Wellchol to slow the diarrhea. A test for C. Difficil bacteria, and enteric pathogens (ova and parasites) in the stool could be helpful I would ask to have your thyroid functions tested. This is just about all I can advise via this forum. I would persist in seeing your healthcare provider until all of this is settled.
