Gel Nail Damage: Thin, Sore, and Burning - What To Do?
QuestionI've recently had my nails done... in gel. The acrylic was starting to lift and crack so I decided to file them down. My nails have gotten very thin due to the gel application and filling. My nails are sore and there is a burning sensation. It is worse when I run warm water on them. What to do?
AnswerDid you actually have your nails done in Gel ... or acrylic? There is a significant difference between the two. Gel should not be filed between appts it breaks the seal on the nail and weakens the product causing lift and cracking...thus it should be left to a professional to do. Have you completely removed the nails ...if so this explains why the nail bed is weak and your nails are sore and have a burning feel. I would use a nail hardening top coat like Nail Tek Intensive Therapy II and just wait for the nail to grow out (also use a good nail treatment like Solar Oil and lotion like Solar Silk) This will encourage the nails to grow out more efficiently and keep them in as good a shape as possible until they do.
If you have not completely removed the gel (or acrylic) then I would say that you have caused a condition called rings of fire! This is when the natural nail is over-filed due to inexperience or lack of care in filing the nail. If this is the case, the natural nail where the artificial nail is NOT is bright red or pink and sore and will feel as though they are burning, they would also be sensitive to hot, cold, touch, breaking etc. Either way, follow the same regime as above using a nail hardening top coat and some cuticle oil and lotion.
Let me know if my assumptions are not correct and you require additional help. Good Luck!
