Severe Thumb Cut at Work: Seeking Advice on Potential Injury & Workers' Compensation

Question
Hello, I'm Nick and I have a question.  At the restaurant I work at, I was cutting bread with a serrated knife, and I cut the tip of my thumb almost halfway off.  I was afraid I had hit the bone, but it doesn't feel like i did.  It is apparent that some of the skin is dead, because is differs in color to the rest of my hand.  I didn't go to the doctor immediately after, because I don't have health insurance, but it should be covered under workers compensation(i filed a report with corporate, just in case).  Some people have told me to get stitches and some have told me to super glue it.  It has been 5 days since the incident, and I just super glued it today and it seems to be working.  Will it continue to heal?  I'm only in pain if the flap of skin gets pulled back.  Also, I've heard that if i cut the bone, it could be fatal...is this true?  I'm convinced I didn't hit the bone.  If you can help me with these questions, it would be a great help.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Nick,
At five days, it is too late to sew the flap back on. Super glue is a good choice at this point and time will tell if it will heal back---probably not. Skin below the flap will heal and the flap will probably need to be cut away down the road. Cutting the bone is not a fatal episode but from what you've said I doubt that you came anywhere near the bone.
