-----Question-----
I know a co-worker that takes about 15 or 20 Tylenol PM tablets a day, (500mg per tablet) for severe headaches (he claims that the tablets keep him awake instead of making him sleepy). He said he's been taking this amount for about 4 or 5 years. I've heard that large amounts of acetaminophen can damage the liver. Is this true, and if so, how long would it take before damage would be seen? Also, what else could be taken for the headaches?
-----Answer-----
tyl pm has benadryl in it.... usually it makes most people tired.. it knocks me out for 24 hrs.... some people don't get sedated by it. Tyl overdose is another story... some people can take huge doses of tylenol spread out thru the day and not get sick, but if taken at one time, would be lethal. I would not go over the rec amount, which is 1000mg every 6 hours. If his headaches are that bad, he needs a medical evaluation, not mega doses of tylenol.
AnswerNo, not the correct assumption..... I have seen people take more, but theoretically, if you take more than 4000 mg of tylenol per day, you put your liver at risk of being damaged. Yes, I have seen people take more but you are risking pretty much everything by taking more. Also, people can overdose on benadryl and get hallucinations, etc.
