QuestionQUESTION: Hi, less than 2 weeks ago, I was diagnosed wioth the flu. This morning I was awoken with what appeared to be in my knowledge what is known as "serum"-"the clear watery fluid" tiny pimple like sacs all over my skin on my face, scalp, stomach and back. I went the doctor and he had told me it was related to my viral infection I had had two weeks prior. He didn't explain it to me to the extent I was seeking, so I was hoping you could help me come to understand this condition I have fallen under. What exactly are they and when can I expect them to disappear? The only thing he gave me to treat the ones in my mouth were lidocaine, what exactly is this? But is there anything I can do to treat the ones on my skin? And last question, are the pimple like things on my skin a virus themself?
Thanks for your time.
ANSWER: Hi Jourdan,
Actually without being able to see what these look like, I'm at a loss to explain this outbreak. It's a little odd to have a rash of this type breakout 2 weeks AFTER a flu. Besides, Flu is NOT associated with a skin rash. Could you have developed an unconnected skin rash, sure. If it doesn't get better in a few days, as it should if it's truly viral in nature, it deserves re-evaluation.

QUESTION: Thanks for the reply.
I wouldn't exactly call it a rash, he said it was like vesicles or something like small minute bumps, vesicular or something...There really is no redness, just little tiny bumps scattered randomly throughout my upper body, filled with clear fluid..then when they are scratched over or popped, they then become red and crusty, crystal like...
With a little extra clarifying information, are you able to provide me with anymore insight, "sorry, I'm pretty desperate at this point for any information you can offer me"
Thanks again.
AnswerHi Jourdan,
If I didn't know any better I'd think these sounded like something called Dermatitis Herpetiformis. If so, the treatment is antivirals like Valtrex or Zovirax. Sometimes a steroid injection can help shorten the course. Regardless, they should resolve on their own.
