Understanding the Duration of Viral Infections and Diagnostic Tests

Question
I was told that a viral "bug"(same as "infection"?) can last for months. If that is true, would blood tests show that, like elevated white blood cells, or do they only show if there's a bacterial infection?

Answer
it is more typical to have a high white count from bacterial infections.... those lead us toward a diagnosis.  Some viral illnesses can last a long time  (AIDS, hepatitis B&C, Epstein Barr (MONO))   But most viral infections like a chest cold resolve in 10-14 days.
