Osteopenia at 23: Understanding Your T-Score & Next Steps

Question
I am a 23 year old female and I had an Ultrasonometer done on my ankle today at a health fair at work and they said I have osteopenia. My T score was -1.9 and my stiffness index was 70 and it's supposed to be at least 100. So I'm really really worried right now. I'm only 23 years old! The lady made a big deal out of it. Is that a big deal? I can't find anything online about someone as young as me with it. Should I go to the Dr about it? And if so, what kind of Dr do I go to? I just mostly want to know if I should be as worried as I am and if it's normal.
Thanks-Heather

Answer
Hi Heather,
An ultrasound is a very poor way of determinig Osteopoenia. You should have a DEXA Scan. That is the gold standard in determining this disease.
If you really DO have osteopoenia, there are a number of reasons for it at your age. My gut feeling is that you probably don't have it , but in view of the ultrasound, I would get a DEXA Scan and if positive, then you should see your doctor.
