Tetanus & Injury Concerns: What You Need to Know
QuestionHi expert,
I recently got scraped on a rusty broom in my fraternity house. Its a broom that has numerous stuff that has been spilled on. The scrap is not too deep but there was a little blood nothing too serious. Its been one hour and its already starting to scab. I had my last tetnus shot in May of 2004. Is there a possiblity I could get tetnus or hiv or some other disease from the scrap? Im kind of a worrier and im freaking out.
AnswerHi Michael,
Just keep an eye on the spot, as long as it doesn't show signs of infection (redness, swelling, tenderness) you'll be okay. Tetanus shots are good for five years so you should get another some time this year, but don't panic about it; I'm a nurse and I only get one about every 8-10 years.
Take care,
Margot
