Understanding Thyroid Lumps: Causes, Tests & Next Steps

Question
My son 49 yrs. has a small lump in centre of throat, area of thyroid, in the small pit between the collar bones I believe that is where the above gland is??? It does not hurt, had ultra sound, barium test and doc says nothing there. How can you have a lump that was not there before and  now is? Any further tests available like asperation necessary?

Answer
That could be at the bottom of the thyroid gland and it may be a cyst.  I would think if it can be felt, that your doctor or a specialist that you will be referred to might want to do a needle biopsy of it... that is a very safe, pretty easy, relatively painless way to find out what tissue is in that lump.
