Understanding Sudden Blood Pressure Spikes: Causes & What to Do

Question
Hi.I'm an otherwise healthy 42 yo male. My blood pressure us typically normal to high normal.I eat fairly healthy walk 4 miles daily and do have anxiety. Due to a family history, I check my BP at home. For the last 18 hours its been running 170/74.The top number simply won't come down.I have never experienced this. Can bp simply spike this high for periods of time? Thanks.

Answer
Dear Slayde,

High blood pressure is diagnosed after 2 consecutive visits to your healthcare provider, approximately 2 weeks apart,  if your blood pressure is elevated at both these visits. . Anxiety can play a part in your readings. I suggest you make an appointment with your healthcare provider for a thorough physical examination.
