High Calcium Levels: Understanding the Risks & What to Do

Question
My mother (77 years old) when to the doctor yesterday for her checkup.  They did blood work & called this morning to say not to take her blood pressure pills.  They claim that she has too much Calcium in her body and she has to go back for more blood work.  Is this normal?  Have you heard of this before?

Answer
Dear Maggie,   Too much calcium in the blood can be very dangerous to the body and the health of the person...  It could be that your mother's blood pressure medication is causing this, but without knowing what type she is taking I can't say for sure, but it sounds like the doctor may think this is the problem also, since he told her to stop taking the blood pressure pills....

However, there are also other medical problems that can cause high calcium levels and by stopping the blood pressure medication, if the calcium levels continue to be high, then the doctor will THINK that it is not the blood pressure medication, but one of the other possibilities...  Other possibilities can be the parathyroid, Ph levels in the body etc....

Thank you,   karen
