Postpartum Period: When Can I Expect My Period After Childbirth?

Question
I GAVE BIRTH 8 WEEKS AGO.  I STILL HAVEN'T HAD A PERIOD.  THE LOCHIA LASTED ABOUT 3 1/2 WEEKS.  MY PARTNER AND I HAD UNPROTECTED SEX DURING THE FOURTH WEEK (MAY 14TH).  IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET PREGNANT THAT SOON AFTER GIVING BIRTH?  HOW LONG WOULD I HAVE TO WAIT TO TAKE A HOME PREGNANCY TEST AND GET ACCURATE RESULTS.

Answer
If you are breastfeeding, your period could wait up to a year or more before returning.  If you are bottlefeeding, it could return anytime, but 8 weeks or more is not unusual.  4 weeks would be very early to be ovulating, but it is theoretically possible that you have gotten pregnant again (this is where "Irish twins" come from).  A pregnancy test is accurate 2 weeks after conception, so go ahead and take one to ease your mind.

To follow up, if you took a test on June 4, and you haven't had sex in the last two weeks, then it would be safe to assume you are not pregnant.  If you have had unprotected sex within the last two weeks, then you need to wait at least two weeks after the last unprotected sex act and test again.
