Postpartum Period Return: What to Expect After Childbirth

My baby was born 10 weeks ago with a normal delivery and I breast fed for 5 days. My periods have not yet returned, is this normal as I have not had any physical examination since my daughter was born and the doctor advised I could not have a smear test until I'd had a period?

The average time for return of fertility when not breastfeeding is six weeks.  If you have not gotten your period within the next month or so, you may want to consult with your doctor to determine the cause.  Remember that your fertility can return unexpectedly, before your first period, so if you have resumed intercourse without birth control, you may actually be pregnant again!
