Question
Hi.Im 26 yrs old and i have never had a regular period. I had to take birth control for 3 months then stop to get pregnant in the past. I am ready to have another baby so i went to my obgyn and they are more concerned about me not getting my period. They put me on metformin and provera. will these to usually help somebody to get there period and also will it help me in getting pregnant? Is there anything different you would suggest?

Answer
Your doctor prescribed two drugs - one (Metformin) an antidiabetic drug, and the other, (Provera) a hormonal adjunct... derived from the female hormone progesterone.

First and foremost, your best source of information is your attending physician.  He has your detailed health history, and is using his diagnostic skills to develop your plan of care.

Having said that, it is important to know that in order to achieve a pregnancy, you must be ovulating regularly, and the best indicator of ovulation is regular menstrual periods.  That is why your doctor is giving you hormonal therapy... They want you to ovulate - extrude an ovum (egg)which would ultimately be fertilized and implant - if it were a perfect world.

But too, bear in mind that your overall health is critical to a healthy pregnancy, and if you have health concerns outside of attempting to conceive, those must also be addressed and resolved or at least managed before a health pregnacy should be attempted.
