QuestionHi,
I am 41 years old, very healthy and 26 weeks pregnant. Starting 5 days ago, I began experiencing near excruciating pain when I walk, stand on one leg (ie to put on shoes or socks), try to run, turn around in bed a certain way...I think that is it. The pain is in my pelvic area. It actually hurts if I touch my pubic bone(s) and the very, for a lack of better way to describe, top of my adductors (although it may even be above there, but you get the idea). Is there any recommendation for how to treat this? I really appreciate your help! I called my dr and he just said it was normal, but none of the friends I have spoken to have experienced anything like what I am describing. Also, if I can manage a way to run (living through the pain), is that a problem? My dr seemed to indicate no, but I am not sure that he was really understanding the amount of pain I am in. I cannot imagine it would be OK, but if it really is, I really would like to exercise!
Also, are there any treatment options that are safe for the baby. I am not willing to use any medications.
I really appreciate your help and advice.
Thank you!
Debbie
AnswerDiscomforts of mid to late pregnancy are varied, but the majority of women have them. There is a common complaint healthcare providers refer to as round ligament pain. When the uterus grows out of the pelvis and becomes an abdominal organ, the ligaments that hold it in place stretch and torque and can become very uncomfortable. Perhaps your discomfort is related to a situation such as this.
Regarding exercise, listen to your body and use good common sense. Be as active as your condition permits, but be gentle with yourself also. When patients ask me about treatment options for their common discomforts of pregnancy, I advise a warm bath and 'tincture of time'!
Having said that always remember that your doctor is your best resource.
