Irregular Periods After Birth Control: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
Hi..

I have read a lot of queries regarding irregular periods after getting off the pil.. however I still have a nagging doubt because my case seems to be a little different:

I finished my last pack of pills on 17/18th sept 2008. I got my period on 23rd Sept 08 (normally this would have been my 6th-7th day of break period and this is normal in my case)
I did not continue with the pill and I got my next period exactly 30 days later on 23rd Oct '08 and i was happy thinking that my cycle has not gone awry.
After this, I got the next period after 35 days on 28th Nov'08 and post that I have still not got my period and its been 39 days and still counting (i am writing this on 6 jan 09). I tested myself for pregnancy (using a standard pregnancy test) on the 36th,37th and 38th day and all three times it was negative
I have always had periods like clockwork all my life(28-32 day cycle). I have never missed a period, bled in the middle of the month or anything.
Some background info: I am 28 yrs old and I have been on the pill since June 2006 untill I stopped in sept 2008(so about 2 yrs duration). Condoms (male) are the only other form of birth control I have ever relied on other than the pill.
I have three questions:
1. Is it normal to have 2 regular periods after getting off the pill and then begin to have irregular periods?
2. Since I have still not got my period and my last one was also on the 35th day instead my usual 30days i cant be sure when and if i am ovulating - is it possible that i am pregnant but its too early to test positive?
3. Should I get a doc to examine me and prescribe something to induce my period - in the off chance that i might be pregnant would this impact the fetus?

Thanks a ton for being patient enough to read through this (fairly) longish spiel

Answer
Hi Shruti,

Will try to answer your questions but also know that I am not a medical doctor so check with your physician. May I ask why you went off the birth control pills?

1. Nothing is really normal about what happens after you go off the pill. There could be many different scenarios. Yes, you could just be having irregular periods because of the change of hormonal levels in your body.

2. It's possible that you could be pregnant if you have been sexually active. It might be too early to test and yes, it would be hard to tell when you are ovulating. If you want to get a free pregnancy test, you can find a local pregnancy resource center at http://www.optionline.org or call 1-800-395-HELP. Another site is
http://www.heartbeatinternational.org/worldwide_directory.asp

3. In my opinion, you should not get your doctor to induce your period. If you were pregnant, this would not be healthy.

Like I said, consult with your doctor or check out those links I sent to see what to do. Would you email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and let me know what happens.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
