Birth Control and Period Irregularities After Abortion: What to Expect

Question
Dear Diane,

About 4 weeks ago, I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life.  I
had a pill abortion.  The Sunday of my abortion I started on birth control.  I
have been on birth control and now I should have gotten my period this
week, but I still haven't (on my 5th day of placebo pill).  Should I continue
with my second month of birth control even if I skip my period? I waited 2
and 1/2 weeks on the pill before I had unprotected sex.  I haven been told
that while on the pill that I might skip a period, but i have also been told by
my doctor that I should have a heavy period after an abortion.  I am just
worried that I still haven't had my period.  I took a pregnancy test and the
result was negative.  Should I continue on my second month of pills?  Is there
a chance I am pregnant again even if the Pregnancy test is negative?

Thank you so much for any advice.

Answer
Hi Jane,

Thanks for your question. I can give you advice but I think you should talk to your doctor as well. I can't tell you about continuing on with the second month of pills. I think you should ask your doctor about that. I can tell you that women after abortion tell me that their periods don't come or are irregular. This should straighten out soon. The hormones in your body are not back to normal yet. About having a pregnancy test, you can contact a pregnancy resource center and get a free one there and some advice. To find one go to http://www.optionline.org or call 1-800-395-HELP. Then if that doesn't locate one, then try this website

Also, sex even taking birth controls is not 100% safe from pregnancy.
Hope this helps. Please let me know what the doctor recommends. My private email address is DCHERYL51@yahoo.com so hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl
