Questionok, i've been on Depo for about a year, since april of last year, im still on it. i dont normally have the symptoms what the doctor said, instead of putting on weight, i lost a lot. i only cramped once.. that dont bother me at all. but my biggest concern is, i am still bleeding, not that heavy, enough to soak a panty liner only. i was given Primolut to stop the bleeding, it did but after a while, the bleeding started again. my doctor said its normal upto the 3rd shot. but this march, im going in for my 5th. still bleeding... i talked to my doctor about this, she said that i should switch contraception, the problem is, i have a thing with pills. i find depo more convinient.
i just want some advice from others. i do want to stop if it promises my normal cycle again, but my mother wont let me. so i have to stick with depo. all i want to know is, is this bleeding normal? even if its been nearly a year.
thank you.
AnswerHi Ria,
This can be a difficult problem. I wonder where you live, since Primolut is not available in the US as far as I know. Time generally takes care of the bleeding, but as you know that's not always true. The 2 other approaches to help the bleeding are either to add estrogen for a while or to increase the progesterone, which is what Depo is. Primolut is a progesterone, so I think that's what your doctor tried. It can also be done by giving your Depo shots either closer together or in higher doses. Estrogen can be given for a while, which may thicken the uterine lining enough to help control the bleeding. Sometimes nothing works and sometimes more time will take care of it. I assume you're young, so I don't think the bleeding means anything bad, just a big annoyance. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
