Delayed Period & Negative Pregnancy Tests: Possible Causes & What To Do

Question
My period is nearly 3 months late. I had a slight spotting last week, I thought my period was starting, but it didn't. I stopped taking birth control in February and my fiance and I have been having unprotected sex, but the pregnancy tests I've taken have come back negative. What could cause this?

Answer
When your period doesn't come for 3 months and you're not pregnant, it means you haven't ovulated in the past 3 months.  This is fairly common, and may be from stress, illness, weight change, or other causes.  Since you'd like to become pregnant, I would see your doctor for an evaluation and to help you to start ovulating.  This is usually not difficult, and involves taking some pills called clomid each month to produce ovulation.  Good luck.
