Irregular Periods: Understanding 3+ Month Absence & Potential Causes

Question
I have not had a period in 3 months. My last period was on November 9th, 2009. Since then, my period has not shown up. I have not really noticed soreness of breast the way I have heard of other women having when they are pregnant. I can't recall having any strange cravings. I have had extremely bad mood swings. I am not under a great deal of stress, and I am not depressed. I am overweight, and my periods have been known to be irregular. I went two months last year with no period, BUT I was under stress because I was getting married. After the wedding, my period was regular again.

I went to my doctor on January 8th, 2010. She did a urine pregnancy test and it came back negative. I still have not had my period. My husband and I have unprotected sex, and we are not really trying to get pregnant, but we wouldn't mind if we were. My doctor told me to start taking folic acid vitamins just in case...? I just want an answer. If I'm not pregnant, I want to know why my period is M.I.A. If I am pregnant, I want to make sure that I get the prenatal care that I need. My doctor told me that it was possible it is just because I am overweight. I have been overweight my whole life, so it is hard for me to believe that that is the cause of it. I am just confused and do not know what to do. Please help me...

Thanks,

A worried Victoria

Answer
Dear Victoria

I agree with your doctor that overweight can be the problem as a part of a wider issue known as polycystic ovary. You need to have some hormonal test and pelvic ultrasound to confirm this provisional diagnosis.

The prognosis and response rate is 90%. Most cases respond with some weight reduction and few need some add treatment.

Best of Luck to you.
