Post-Surgical Abortion Bleeding: What's Normal & When to Worry

Question
QUESTION: I had a surgical abortion on 2nd of march and strtd a light spotting on the same night.then i started bleeding after 2 days an it only left for a week.since then i have not bled at all.could you please tell me if it is normal.

ANSWER: Hello, Shamila,

There is nothing normal about having an abortion, and nothing normal about what happens afterward. That said, be thankful you are not bleeding. Bleeding is dangerous and can weaken a woman. Your lack of bleeding means it is more likely the abortionist didn't perforate your uterus, and that's a good thing. Because your pregnancy hormones were high when you had the abortion, they will take awhile to dissipate. Until they do, you probably won't bleed. Nobody really knows how long that will take for a given woman, but it usually takes several weeks. However, you could be fertile in the meantime, so be careful. If you are not married, don't have sex at all. You deserve not to live in fear of pregnancy, and as long as you are having sex, no matter what precautions you take, you will live in that fear. You also shouldn't have sex for a couple of weeks after an abortion, even if you are married. If you are married, you can learn to tell when you are fertile. If you would like more information on that, please let me know. Also, please let me know if you want more information on the medical consequences of abortion. Surgical abortion can harm your future children. There are precautions you can take. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing, and stay safe!

QUESTION: So does this mean i am still pregnant? I am having normal vaginal discharge. When will the termination complete properly. I am scared that i might be pregnant. I am not married but i will not have sex now. And what does It mean that my uterus didnt perforate at the time of abortion?

Answer
Hello, Shamila,

I'm not saying that you are still pregnant. Probably not. Why are you afraid you might still be pregnant? A surgical abortion SHOULD have been completed at the time. If you are still having trouble, then something went wrong. However, you very well might not have a period even at this point.

I'm saying that abortionists often perforate a woman's uterus. This means that they cut into the muscle of the uterus, and do more than just remove the lining. Removing the lining is damaging enough because it causes scarring. But when a woman's uterus is perforated, it will cause a lot of bleeding as a general rule, so the fact that you aren't bleeding much means this probably didn't happen. However, when you do have a period, if you bleed heavily, there is still that possibility. Another problem is the fact they have to cut the placenta away, because it is firmly attached. This can also cause excessive bleeding, because it is damaging the uterus itself, not just the lining, and this happens in every surgical abortion.

I hope that everything will be OK for you. Please keep in touch and feel free to ask any other questions you have. If you are still pregnant, please see a decent doctor. Don't go back to the person who did the abortion. A decent doctor can help you through whatever problems you face. Please stay safe.
