Medical Abortion & Potential Complications: What to Expect
QuestionHi Dr,
I am 25 years old and recently had a medical abortion. I took the second set of pills yesterday and only passed about 3-4 small clots the size of a walnut and then just had bleeding after that. Just want to make sure if this is normal and if so, how soon will I know if I am still pregnant? Just am very nervous. Today is May 17th and I have an appointment June 1st, just want to see if there is anyway i could know sooner. My anxiety is killing me thank you. Also, is only a few small clots normal? I was only 5 weeks along and was also told I have a small uterous. Thanks!
AnswerDear Jenn,
If you were only 5 weeks pregnant, it's possible that the abortion pills worked with only passing some small clots. Usually the bleeding is heavier than a period. I am not sure why your doctor is having you wait so long for a follow up. It would be better for you to get your follow up visit this week, so that in case it didn't work, you would still be able to try to end it with a second set of misoprostol pills. I would go ahead and call the office, and let them know your experience.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
