NuvaRing & Blood Clot Concerns: Symptoms & Risks

Question
Hi, I have been on the nuvaring for about 10 months and the last two months I just always feel sick and weak, and I always have pains in my legs and arms.  I was wondering if this could be systems of a blood clot?  I do smoke and I know that can make my chances higher of this risk, but I am very worried.  If you could maybe guide me to the right answer that would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks, Mandie

Answer
Hi Mandie,
I'm not a medical doctor but I've done some research on the NuvaRing. I would not recommend it or any hormonal method of birth control. I only advise women to use non-hormonal methods such as condoms, Natural Family Planning or of course, abstinence. I can't advise you about a blood clot, you would need to consult with your physician. But there are some side effects and risks, such as:
A - Abdominal pain (severe)
C - Chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood
H - Headache (severe), numbness or weakness in arms or legs
E - Eye problems (vision loss, blurring, flashing lights)
S - Severe leg pain in calf or thigh

There are others listed. I would consult your doctor and please email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and tell me what happens. I'm concerned.
