Post-Abortion Period Irregularity: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
I had a surgical abortion on 14th Sep. I was approx 9 weeks pregnant. All seemed fine & I had almost no pain or bleeding. More than 9 weeks later I still have not had a period.  I did a pregnancy test 5 weeks after the abortion, which was negative and another one today just to double check - still negative. I had very few symptoms while pregnant - just a constant feeling of slight nausea.  This went after the abortion but about 2 weeks ago it came back and has been with me ever since.  What could be going on and should I go to see a Dr or just wait & see what happens?  If the latter, how long should I wait before seeing someone?  I am in the UK if that makes a difference.

Answer
Dear Em,
This sounds completely normal, as long as you have a negative pregnancy test. The only problems that could be going on (continuing pregnancy, retained tissue, or molar pregnancy), would result in a continued positive pregnancy test.  My only concern is that sometimes urine pregnancy tests are not that reliable.  I think it would be good for you to get a blood pregnancy test to be 100% sure.  If the blood test is negative, I don't have an explanation for your nausea; hopefully it will go away within the next weeks. The lack of bleeding after an abortion up to three months is otherwise normal. I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
