QuestionHello,
Im a little confused as i had a surgical abortion 5 weeks ago at 8 weeks four days. I was happy about the pregnancy however im a type 2 diabetic so i wasnt prepared for the preganancy and was at greater risk of complication.
The abortion was done at mary stopes and was very quick around 10mins. I did not have any bleeding for two days and when i did it was very light, i then had the very painfull experience of passing alot of blood clots and tissue in the spare of an hour rather than over the first two weeks. Ive been having lower ab pain since to this day and the bleeding only stopped fully a week ago. My doctors thinks i have an infection and put me on two lots of antibotics.
My worry is that with all that my body had already been through, me and my parnter had to take the morning after pill last thur a week tomorrow as the condom split! But ive had no symptoms from morning after pill ie no bleeding. Im worried that something might be wrong or i could be preganant again?
Any advise would be greatful, sorry my message is long winded.
AnswerHello, kirsty,
First of all, whoever told you that you can't have a successful pregnancy with diabetes didn't know what he was talking about! I gather that you had certain information that diabetes would be a problem, and you didn't want to face all that. Just speaking from personal experience, I'm not aware of any difference between Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. The main problem with gestational diabetes is that the baby's head tends to be large, and a woman might have to have a Caesarian section.
I have two grandchildren who were born to a mother with gestational diabetes. I am not aware that the doctor told her it would be too risky to have them. She had a Caesarian with each, but both are fine.
All of that said, I will give you some recommendations regarding how to bring diabetes under control. Stay away from foods that have artificial sweeteners or corn syrup, or fructose (including fruit juices, especially canned). Regular sugar isn't nearly the problem. But corn syrup or fructose is. Artificial sweeteners cause people to put on weight. They're also toxic. If you want to eat or drink something you have sweetened yourself, you might try Stevia. Most diabetic medications are harmful, so if you can get off taking them, you're better off. Obesity also aggravates diabetes. Obesity can be hard to get rid of. Diets usually don't work. A permanent change in diet works much better. Eat few carbs, but a normal amount of fat. Better sources of fat are coconut oil, olive oil, macadamia nut oil, and so forth. Eat real butter instead of margarine. Stay awy from canola oil, cottonseed oil, soy oil, and corn oil. In addition to not being good for you in general, they sometimes come from genetically engineered plants. Lowfat diets tend to cause the body to retain fat. (And by the way, the Atkins diet is NOT healthy. Among other things, it is laden with monosodium glutimate, which is a neurotoxin.) Eat more protein. Protein tends to make blood sugar more even, because it digests more slowly. In the morning, if you can, while still fasting from the night, take a walk. Eat protein when you finish. A walk of 10 minutes or less will be fine for starting, and can be extended as you gain strength. Take Omega 3 fatty acids, but try to avoid things rich in Omega 6. Make sure you have enough Vitamin D by taking Vitamin D3 supplements (you need to have your blood tested periodically because it's possible to overdose), and don't take Vitamin A (possibly beta carotene instead, if you have a need).
Here are a couple of web sites that have information on supplements you can take that will help with diabetes, and other things you can do:

Now about your abortion. I think you must have had a surgical abortion. If you had lots of clots and tissue, they probably botched the abortion. Not surprising; a frightening number of abortions are botched, even though the facility seemingly has a good reputation. They either left tissue behind, or they injured you unnecessarily, or both. All surgical abortions result in injury. They have to force open the cervix, and this cause many tiny tears in it. This can cause problems with future children; it can lead to severe birth defects. Once inside, they have to scrape off the lining and cut loose the placenta. This means leaving an open and raw wound all over the inside of your uterus. This can cause scar tissue to form, which can lead either to tubal pregnancy, or complications at birth. You should be thoroughly checked by a decent doctor. Don't go to Marie Stopes. Everyone there is involved in unethical behavior. Abortion is unethical. People who reject medical ethics don't care of they injure you or not. If they did, they wouldn't do an abortion on you in the first place, because abortion is harmful.
And yes, infection after abortion is common as well. Sometimes it is deadly. Abortion also makes a woman more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases, so if your partner has ever slept with anyone else, you are at risk. Taking antibiotics for infection can kill beneficial bacteria, which can harm your digestion. This isn't going to help obesity or diabetes, either. Proper digestion is very important. To counteract this, doctors provide pro-biotics to take with them. You can also get pro-biotics as supplements, or if you can get a good quality live-culture yogurt that is truly fresh (before the major amount of bacteria have died off), or Kombucha (fermented tea) with live cultures, this can help restore your intestinal flora.
You have now learned the hard way that condoms can't be trusted. It is in your best interests to stop putting yourself at risk. Try to find another way to express affection, other than sexual penetration (in the normal place or anyplace else). As you may be aware, the morning after pill is a powerful medication, that can also cause problems, and it could result in a very early abortion. It's not safe, either.
If you are pregnant, please do not have another abortion. That will only make matters worse. With the health problems you have, it is more dangerous anyway. Don't worry about the possible effect of the morning after pill on the baby. Generally speaking, either the baby won't live in the first place, or he or she will be fine.
Please consider that you are currently in a frame of mind where you are heaping damage on your body because the damage you already have. Try to get away from doing this to yourself. You really deserve better. I hope this helps. Please take care of yourself and stay safe. Feel free to write any time, and let me know how you are doing.
