Post-Abortion Birth Control Options & Irregular Periods
QuestionI received a medical abortion last week, January 23, 2008. They told me to follow up with my regular gyno after the follow up visit for birth control options. After reading alot of these question and answers, it seems to me that my period may well be irregular for a long time after the abortion, how can I go about getting the Depo Provera shot ASAP, I am a smoker over 35 so I can not take the pill. My b/f and I also had intercourse last night and this morning since most of the heavy bleeding has subsided, is there any medical reason for us to abstain? I was also not given a prescription for antibiotics from the physician who administered the pills to me, should I be on an antibiotic?
AnswerDear Kel,
You are able to get pregnant immediately after an abortion, so you should abstain or use condoms until you are on a birth control method. You can start on the Depoprovera shot right away - they should have given it to you where you had the abortion done. Perhaps you can still go back there to get it. You do not need antibiotics with a medical abortion.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
