Post-Abortion Pregnancy Concerns: Understanding Spotting & Testing
QuestionI had a surgical abortion a week ago. I was 7 weeks pregnant, and the doctor did a vaginal ultrasound after the procedure to confirm sucessful abortion. I was awake during abortion-and it wasn;t very painful, and i bleed very little. I have been spotting all week that's it. I was in no pain or discomfort after the surgical abortion. I took a home pregnacy test today (first response) and it was positive (the 2nd line was very light-but that is how the pregnancy test were positive for me prior to the abortion). I have not been sexually active since the abortion, but am worried that maybe the abortion wasn;t successful since it wasn;t painful, and i did not bleed or cramp much after the procedure. I have a follow up appt in 2 weeks but wonder if i should try to see the doctor before then.
Thank you in advance for your help. This is my first abortion-and i have never been pregnant prior to this time-so im very nervous.
AnswerIt can take up to 4 weeks for the pregnancy test to become negative. A faint line is normal after 7 days. The ultrasound verified that the pregnancy was removed. You can have bleeding up to 2 weeks. You may start to get heavier bleeding over the next week. The doctor will perform another US at your follow-up visit.
