Mifeprex Experience: Bleeding, Breast Changes & Recovery - What to Expect

Question
QUESTION: I took 200 mg of  mifeprex (mifepristone) last tuesday, a week ago today. For the first day i didnt have any bleeding, the morning after i woke up and had 1-2 small clots pass. Ive had on and off bleeding for the past week. The day after i took it i noticed that my breats had decreased in size, im assuming from the lack of progesterone. In the next day or two they started to hurt again and become slightly bigger but not as big as they were before the pill. My stomache doesnt seem to be decreasing in size either. Ive been driving myself insane over this all week and certainly wish i had found this site sooner.   How often does the 200 mg pill work on its own without misoprostol? And is it possible to have bleeding such as mine and still be pregnant? I go for an ultrasound tomorrow and am hoping my baby survived. do you often hear of success stories in which women have decided not to take the 2nd set of pills and had a successful pregnancy?

ANSWER: Hello, April,

My heart goes out to you. You are in a tough situation.

A lot depends on how far along in your pregnancy you were at the time you took the pills. If you can tell me that, I can tell you more about what might be going on. I'll let you answer, and then I'll comment further. At least, you will be going for an ultrasound tomorrow, and since it's been a week, that should give a fairly good indication.

And yes, some women do have success at having a normal baby, particularly if they take the first pills too soon or too late. So let me know.

I'll talk to you soon. Take care.

QUESTION: It was just the one pill. They said they dont do it the way the FDA approved it to be done.  The woman who did my ultrasound said I was 6 weeks, she didnt say any days but she was very non chalant(spelling??) about it.  Thank you for your quick response!

Answer
Hello again, April,

You're welcome. I wanted to make sure and catch your response right away, as well.

If she meant six weeks from the date of conception, the chances are excellent your baby is fine. If six weeks from your last menstrual period, there is still a chance, though it is a smaller one. The fact that you experienced increased symptoms of pregnancy is encouraging. The situation is that Mifepristone cuts off the supply of progesterone to the baby. However, at some point in pregnancy, around six weeks, the baby starts to make his or her own progesterone. At that point, Mifepristone no longer works reliably. As for the person who did the ultrasound, if she feels abortion is acceptable, her attitude doesn't surprise me. People get hardened if they do that sort of thing long enough.

If you are going back to the same person tomorrow and she IS involved with your abortion in any way, I recommend you get your ultrasound someplace else. They'll try to pressure you into completing the abortion. At this point, they would make more money, and help prevent liability issues, so there is a motivation to apply pressure. They'll try to scare you into it.

There are organizations all over the United States that provide free ultrasound to a woman who is pregnant. You can find one near you by going to this web site:

http://www.optionline.org/

I recommend you find one and go there. Usually, you can get the ultrasound right away. In the meantime, try to get a good night's rest. There is a good chance your baby is all right. I will pray for you both. Please let me know what happens.
