Possible Pregnancy After Abortion: What to Know

Question
I had abortion December 22, 2010.  I had sex January 8,2011. I went in to the doctors on January 17,2011 to do some bloodwork & when I went back to doctor on January 21,2011 I was told that my blood showed I was pregnant. Is it possible that my blood would still show me being pregnant from before abortion or is it more likely that I am pregnant from after abortion? Please tell me what you think.  Thank you!!!

Answer
Hello, Jennifer,

You're welcome.

Women's bodies react differently to abortion. It is common for pregnancy hormones to last awhile after abortion. But it is also common for fertility to return quickly. Nobody will be able to tell you over the internet how your body reacted.

The only way you will probably know whether or not this is a new pregnancy is to test again in a week. You really need a comparison between this test and that one, though. So you might do well to test in a week and again in two weeks, so you can compare. Also, you may notice a change in symptoms. If you didn't tell the doctor that you had had an abortion, he will interpret any pregnancy hormones as indicating a current pregnancy.

If you don't want to live in fear of pregnancy, and you're not married, it would be wise to refrain from having sex. It's not in your best interests. If you are married, you can learn to tell when you are fertile. But it is also perfectly acceptable to have a baby.

If you are not married, have a talk with your partner. You took a risk with your life to have an abortion, and you can still have some serious problems years later, and it may also cause problems with your future children. You deserve better. Find out if he is willing to protect you from the possibility of pregnancy by respecting your body and not having sex with you.

If you face any difficulties in the future, please be aware that there are organizations all over the United States that offer many different kinds of help. You can find one near you by going to this web site:

Please take care, and let me know how you do. I will be here if you have any more questions.
