Understanding Post-Abortion Discharge: Causes & When to Worry

Question
I had a medical abortion around a month ago & was told to take antibiotics a week after I had an abortion.

My abortion was successful, I took a home pregnancy test a week ago & it came out negative. I still haven't gotten my period.

Yesterday I started having yellow discharge. There was no foul smell yesterday but there is today. I can't go to the doctor simply because I can't afford it.

I have no pain or itchiness, nor do I experience discomfort when I urinate.

I want to know if this is an infection? Or if this is normal? Are there any over-the-counter medications I can take? I am currently on birth control pills & on cough capsules because I have a cough.

Answer
Hello, monica,

People never consider whether they can afford medical care if they have a complication from abortion. In your case, you NEED to go to the doctor, whether you can afford it or not, because you may well have an infection. Whenever you have an odor like that, there is a good chance it is an infection. Antibiotics only protect from bacteria, and there are a lot of other things that can cause an infection, including viruses and fungus.

There is nothing normal about having an abortion, so nothing that happens afterward is normal, either. I can't prescribe an over-the-counter medication for you. I am not a doctor. Birth control pills increase the likelihood you will get a sexually transmitted disease, because they alter the pH of the fluids in the area. And in any case, no ethical doctor will prescribe anything without examining you, nor should they. They need to have your medical history, too, and may need to run tests.

There are several things you didn't tell me. One thing you didn't mention was how far along you were when you had the abortion. This is important. And did you measure from your last menstrual period or from the date you think you conceived? You also didn't say what kind of cough capsules you are on.

There is an organization in the Philippines that may be willing to help you with medical care. Here are the phones numbers; call the one nearest you:

Other than that, I can't really suggest anything. Please remember: abortion is not only not normal, it is very dangerous. There are also long term medical consequences. You need to be taking Vitamin D3 (which will help with the infection as well) for the rest of your life. Start with 5000IU a day, and get your blood tested occasionally to make sure you're not getting too much. Ideally, you should have a level of about 75ng/ml, but when you are fighting disease, it can go as high as 100. Higher than that is considered too much.

And please, no more abortions. They are dangerous, cause complications, and can cost you your life. The birth control pills are also bad for your health. If you are in no position to have a child, you shouldn't be having sex unless you are married. Sex may be enjoyable, but it puts you at medical risk, and it's not worth it. You deserve better. Your partner needs to protect you.

Good luck. Let me know what you find out.
