QuestionI just got gel nails put on Wed. night, & I noticed today, (Sat. morning,) that they seem to have darkened, or rather, the pearly white now has a goldish tinge to it, as does the pink part also. Only 1 nail (thumbnail) did not turn goldish on me. Any idea what happened? I don't go tanning, and haven't used anything unusual, just the usual soap, shampoo, hair gels etc. I plan to stop by the nail salon later today & ask, but I would like to see what someone else not connected to the salon has to say. I am really disappointed, I've been reading this site and I know she used a white powder, maybe they are not real gels, that doesn't really matter to me, but I want that pretty white pearly look back!! Is there anything I can do?? ( I spent about $40 on these.........)
AnswerHi Mary!
Just the usual stuff you use every day with easily cause discoloration. And beings you didn't get discoloration on one nail, I'm figuring it is from a product. Most likely hair gel, if any of them. Also look at where you work, sometimes halogen lights can cause discoloration.
I will tell you that if someone used a powder on you while getting gels done, it should matter. It could be MMA, and you do not want that product on your nails. You never know how you are going to react to it, a person could get a severe infection, or crack their natural nail in two. So I am stressing to you that it does matter, and allot of times the product is so pore that it discolors. So I would be worried. http://www.nailsbydesign.homestead.com/MMA.html
On a way better note, there is such thing as a Gel System in which powder is used. It is a product by BackScratchers, it comes in purple, pinkish, black bottles. Basically it is a gel cured then glue is put in the area of the white tip. Then the powder is sprinkled on the glue or the nail is dipped into the powder. This can also be done with the pinks, but is quite rare. They are often referred to as Dips. And the product does run a little less expensive so that is probably why you got a full set of gels for only $40 an average full set of gels ranges from $45 to $65. I have only met one person in Montana that charged $45 everyone else was $65. So I have to say $40 is pretty good!
If your nails where done as I described than you are fine as far as MMA being used. If there was liquid and powder mixed at any time, I would be a little more worried.
As far as the darkening, try cleaning your nails off with alcohol, if that doesn't work, go to your local drug store and find a two sided buffer, and buff the discoloration off. If it is inside the nail, not just on the surface, consult with you technician, so they can see what is happening. Also discuss the products you use, she may know of an ingredient that reacts to the product. Then you may want to switch nail products, or hair products or try a different top coat or something! Keep a scrub brush around to scrub your nails after using hair products. Use gloves while doing household maintenance, and so on!
If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask..
Thanks!
