Why Does My Manicure Polish Flake? Causes & Solutions

Question
Whenever I paint my nails at home, the paint lasts approx. 4-5 days. EVERY time I have gone to a manicurist (and I have used many, in different states!), the polish begins to flake within hours! I like the initial results that a pro gives, but I have even had dark polish flake off in the middle of meetings when I'm not even moving! I've asked manicurists if they could give the manicure sans polish for a few dollars less due to this problem, and they ALL say their polish won't do this but it always does. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Lori

The lasting power of a manicure depends on many factors.  The primary being: the type of nails the client has.
If a client has
a) thin nails prone to bending
b) nails that tend to be oily (such as the hair and skin)
c) nails that are exposed to water frequently and other harsh household cleaning products.  The nails will absorb the water and expand, then contract again when they dry out. This breaks the 'contact' of the polish to the nail. Also, harsh chemicals will do the same.  Use gloves when washing dishes and any other household chores.  A good rule of thumb is if you wouldn't put it on your face, dont put your hands in it without gloves.

These factors will limit the durability of a manicure.
Also, the technician needs to do a good and thorough prep of the nail.
This includes: pushing back the cuticles and removing any tissue from the nail plate, lightly buffing the nails, then dehydrating them to remove any oils and dust on the nail plate.

It's certain that in some cases, products 'do' make a difference, however, not in all.  There is no guarantee unfortunately.

One trick is to apply clear polish over the manicure every 2nd day, to reseal it, making sure to brush some along the free edge.

The only way to guarantee no chipping is if you had enhancements put on, in the form of a natural overlay (no tips applied).  Polish will NOT chip from Acrylic, nor UV Gel.  EVER.

I hope this helps
Best regards
