Redness and Sensitivity After Manicures: Causes & Solutions

Question
I have been wearing nails for many years, and have tried many different salons. After my nails are filled or new set are applied, I have itching and redness and tenderness for 2-3 days. Is there anything I can do and why does this happen?

Answer
Hi Sandy- I wish I had better news for you, but it sounds to me like you have developed a sensitivity to liquid and powder enhancements- this happens from repeated exposure of your skin to uncured products (ie: liquid monomer, mixtures that have not yet hardened).  It happens over time, and if it has in fact become a full blown allergy, there is no fix for it- they will always bother you.
Trying many different salons is great for finding a good tech and a good connection, but currently there are more poorly educated techs than not, and chances are you are going to a tech that is using unsafe procedures and techniques, and only because s/he doesn't know any better.
The only thing you can do is to take a bit of a break from your enhancements, make sure they are healthy, then find a reputable tech that is not only licensed, but a master in her chosen product line.  Look for someone that knows the science behind their products, and how to take the best care of your own natural nail, and not just to add length and color.
I have been always more than happy to try and find a referral in someones area- just e-mail me personally at hreynosa@hotmail.com

You may also want to consider seeing an allergy specialist, they can test specifically for an allergy to EMA (the main ingredient in liquid monomer), or see if it IS just a sensitivity, which CAN be worked around by a skilled technician.

BTW:  The reason they itch for 2-3 days and not just when the nails seem "wet," is because it takes 24 hours or so to fully cure a liquid and powder nail. And that makes it uncured product, and if not done perfectly, touching your cuticles, which are part of your skin.
Hope this is helpful to you, let me know if I can be of further help ;)
