QuestionI slammed my fingertip in a door about 2 weeks ago, it swelled up huge and I had to get a hold drilled in it. The nail has just fallen off. Not sure how to care for an exposed nail-bed??? I have like 10 coats of nail strengthener on it right now to create a barrier because I keep bumping it. I can not stand bandaids!! The nail bed is not smooth its bumpy...not sure if thats right? Any helpful information on this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks
AnswerEverything you experienced is perfectly normal. Even the bumpy growback- although if the matrix (the root of the nail bed, it is the part that is actively producing keratin) is damaged, it does not regenerate, so you will have to wait until the nail grows back fully to see how it will turn out.
I will caution you about putting nail strengthener on your exposed nail bed- not a good idea, it can lead to you becoming sensitive to certain chemicals. As much as it stinks, try to tough it out with a band aid, and use a good cuticle oil a few times a day to help the skin heal up better. Solar Oil by Creative Nail Designs is my favorite.
Good luck, be as patient as you can! :)
