Understanding Vertical Black Lines Under Nails: Causes & Solutions

Question
I have had silks and now gel nails for over 20 years.  Recently, thin vertical black lines are growing under the nail, they are even growing out with the new growth of the real nail, so I guess it isn't in the nail bed.
Any comments?

Answer
Actually, splinter hemorrhages (which look like what you're describing) do sometimes grow out with the free edge.  These are caused by blood seeping up from the nail bed into the "rails and grooves" that seal the nail plate to the nail bed.  They usually occur from trauma to the nail plate or bed--for example, if a nail enhancement was ripped away, or cracked, or if the nail plates have been overfiled.   Rarely, it can be a sign of illness, and you should check with your doctor.

I hope this helps--feel free to follow up if you have any other questions!
