OPI Polish Issues: Quick Chip & Sticky Finish - Troubleshooting Guide

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have had a problem lately with 3 of my clients. Twice the polish of a pedicure came off veery easily (as in they could take it off with their thumb) and the polish had become somewhat sticky. We use OPI products in our salon and do not mix brands. Do you know what could have caused this phenomenon? Also in one manicure the client told us that her manicure polish came off the very same day! we always wipe the nails with OPI NAS 99% after the massage with the cream and so I do not know what else we could do to prevent this from happening and ensure our polish to last more than one day. Thank you for your time! greetings from Durango,Mexico

ANSWER: Hi Diana

Im assuming that you are used to the heat in your country, so that shouldnt be the cause?!!

Does this happen after you have soaked the nails in water during a manicure or pedicure?

Has this happened on a new client, or clients that have previously not had this problem?

If they are new clients the enamel may be contaminated with oil, or something that has damaged the make-up of the enamel.

If it is on regular clients that don't normally have this problem, then it may be the water soaking.
Nails absorb lots of water if they soak, this can in some cases cause enamel to be "pushed off" the nail.

Lastly, do you tell your clients to avoid hot/warm water for the rest of the day?
Soaking in a warm bath of washing up (even with gloves on) can "soften" the enamel leading it to peel off.

Hope this helps

QUESTION: Hi Liza
We are accostumed to the heat in Mexico so I don't think that is the cause. The 3 clients hands and feet were soaked in water during the manicure and pedicure. This happened with new clients (the three of them). And the enamel can't be contaminated with oil because they're basically brand new!! I have since done the manicure water-free but with the spa manicure I do have an effervescent soak from OPI that I use and they do wash their hands in that...should I cut that step out? Lastly, the client that had a manicure took a shower the day AFTER the manicure...and so did her daughter who also had a manicure done, and only one client's enamel came off.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Diana

The soak should be fine. It only seems to be a problem soaking nails with some clients.

Maybe with new clients, during consultation, ask if they always have a problem with enamel peeling off. If they do, perform a water-free manicure.

Good luck!
