First-Time Artificial Nails: A Review for Travel & Durability

Question
Hi - Today I decided to try the nail tips because I am going to be out of the country for a couple of weeks and didn't want to have to worry about polish chipping, etc. during that time.  I have healthy nails, no obvious problems, and have had the gel manicure satisfactorily for about 8 months now.  Today was my first experience with the artificial nails.  My sister has artificial nails and has used the salon for a few years now and has always been satisfied.   My nails are normally very nicely shaped (as I've been told by others).  When the manicure was finished I noticed that with the artificial nails on my fingernails they looked "wider" than they usually are, and seem to be "sore".  Since this was my first experience I didn't know if this was "normal".  The nail therapist did spend quite a bit of time using the small round "drill" for smoothing and shaping.  Is it possible that the "soreness" is normal following such a procedure?  I hope you can help me with this question. Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Gail
It sounds like the tips may not have been sized correctly, thus leaving your natural nails wider than the enhancement itself. You could go back and ask them to fix it with a file. I'm hoping that you don't have any gaps underneath your artificial tip, because that could be a problem when water and bacteria finds its way in. On the soreness, this can also be from the size of the tips. However, if your nail tech used acrylic, it will sometimes have a tightening effect in the first 24-48 hours.
I am a bigger fan of Sculptured acrylic or gel nails. It envelops the edge of your natural nails and I find they are easier to grow out.

I hope that this has answered your question, if not, please let me know : )
