Gel Nails After Tips: Considerations for Short, Weak Nails

Question
I've worn tips for many years, and I have recently started a new profession.  I am considering  gel nails, and I have a few questions.  My first question is do they look natural? Secondly, I am only allowed to have nails no longer than 1/4 inch from my fingertips, is this possible to do with gels? Third is it possible to have a French manicure on nails as short as this? Lastly, since my nails will be quite weak and brittle, will gels help to overcome this?

Answer
Jan,
Before you get gels make SURE that the place you are going to get them done at is REALLY doing gels.
Gels can be done at any length. Yes, you can wear a french polish on your nails. If your nailtech is keeping up with the trends, she can give you a pink and white gel and you will not need polish.
No product will make your nails longer, stronger or more healthy. If there was such a product, everyone would be using it!!
I have to tell you that you did not wear "tips." Tips are applied to start the nails if there is nothing to work with. You had product applied on top of the tips and your nails. The tips grow out quite fast, so you just have product on your nails. Some techs will use tips to start out with gels.
A tech who is good and takes classes to set herself apart from the others will be able to sculpt your nails out and make them look beautiful.
I am going out on a limb here and tell you that if you patronize non-English speaking shops, they do NOT do gels. They say they do, but they do not. If anyone is using a liquid and a powder is NOT doing gels. I get more questions on All Experts about this. Every letter says they have gel but actually have MMA on their nails.
Please let me know what you decide and what type of place you are going to.
buenos dias,
Lynnette
