Gel Nail Chipping: Causes, Fixes & Salon Considerations

Question
I got gel nails on Saturday and today (Tuesday) two of them are chipped. There are tips on some fingers to even the lengths, but both chips are on non-tipped fingers.

There was no powder involved, just a goopy gel and UV light (three coats). It was my understanding that gel nails didn't chip like this, so I'm really disappointed. I won't continue at this salon on a long-term basis, but should I go back to them to get the chips fixed? Also, the tech airbrushed the tips white (I was expecting a pink and white...I blame the language barrier), but I can easily see where the false tips actually start, under the gel. Is that normal?

Thanks so much!

Maureen

Answer
Dear Maureen,

Sometimes, if the nail is prepped incorrectly, the gel will chip away. Also, if the gel is applied too thinly.

Chipping can occur with any product/system due to the following:
- incorrect prep
- incorrect application
- with uv gels, if the gel isn't cure sufficiently (which can be blamed on old bulbs, wrong type of UV light, hands not left under light long enough...)
- nails not a suitable length for the client (meaning, too long) and the client's use of their hands is too rough for that length (too active a lifestyle)
etc..
There are many causes of chipping.

Without seeing your nails, and not knowing specifically how the enhancements were applied, I can't respond if it is normal or not in your case.

No, you shouldn't see where the tips start. If they were applied correctly, they would have been blended and 'invisible' unless the wrong type of tips were used altogether, ...

There are many possibilities of what went wrong.

My best advice to you is to seek out a technician with whom you can openly converse and EASILY communicate what your needs, and wants are.
Just as you wouldn't choose a doctor you can't talk to, the same applies for your technician.

Please feel free to contact me again.
