Why Do Nail Gels Sometimes Burn Under UV Light? - Is It Harmful?

Question
Why does it hurt (burn) sometimes when I put my nails under the UV light when I get my nails done when they fill in the gel?  Is that harmful?  It's the first time I've ever had gels put on and it worries me.

Answer
Hi Stacey
Gel products contain something called photo-initiators that are activated when exposed to ultra-violet light(typically, there is no harm to your nail if a heat spike occurs). Some gels contain more than others. If the nail begins to burn, then you should take it out of the light and it should stop burning right away. One way to reduce the possibility of a heat reaction, is to place the hand just outside of the light for a few seconds before entering the lamp. Be sure to let you nail technician know that this is happening, having your nails done should be a treat, not a painful experience :)
