Bruised Nail: Causes, Treatment & When to See a Doctor

Question
I have been a nail biter for as long as I can remember. I have a bruised nail, probably hemorrhage under the nail for several years. I assumed that it was permanent. I heard about using a paper clip to stab the nail and relieve the blood. Would that help considering that the nail has been like that forever? It doesn't really hurt. Is there another way? Thanks

Answer
If the bruise has been there for several years, it's time to consult a doctor. Just like bruises anywhere else on your body, a subungal hematoma (bruise under the nail) will normally heal after a few weeks. So before you try to fix it, see a doctor and make sure that it really is just a bruise and not a sign of something more serious.
