Lipstick vs. Lip Stain: A Timeless Beauty Debate

Lip colour has been a thing of obsession for many of us women for a long long time. And well for a long time, lip colour was synonymous with lipsticks but as times changed so did this. Lip gloss made a very bold and strong entry. But the latest in the series are the lip stains. But no matter what the choice, lipstick or lip stain, even today you will not find a ladies bag that does not have a lip colour stowed away in a secret corner!

Lipstick or Lip Stain – Which do you prefer?

Lip sticks were the first ever lip colour products to enter the market. They were a cake of different ingredients like waxes, oils, emollients etc. melted together and placed in a tube.

They were meant to give the user full coverage and depending on the type, the shine they render varies, but they remained favourite for us for a long time. We daringly say we will continue to use them for a very very long time.

However, the more recent favourite that has caught on like a rage are the lip stains! They have very simple and logical reasons for being the favorite ones. They keep your lips tinted for longer! They are neither opaque like lipsticks that at times can simply look much and neither are the translucent like gloss that just don’t give enough coverage. Stains have a very neutral look and if you choose, you can make it glamorous with a coating of gloss! Plus they are so very easy to use as they generally come in tubes with applicators. Don’t they sound like heaven sent.

Types of Lip stains:

Lip stains can be found in many containers or formats. They are as mentioned below.

    1. Marker
    2. Brush on
    3. Gel pumps
    4. Cream or pot

How to use:

1.  Before you apply, exfoliate your lips as stains stay better on smoother lips.

2.  Follow this with a lip balm to moisturize your lips.

3.  The lip stain bottle (or jar)  need to be shaken so that the lip stain components are mixed evenly to give your lips an even appearance.

4.  Now, use a lip liner to line the lips. If a natural look is what you prefer, skip this step.

5.  Place the tip of lip stain applicator on the center of your upper lip; start from the upper lip bow and work your way to the corner. Repeat the same for the other side.

6.  If you are looking to blend the color properly, wash your hands and use your fingers. Start from the center and move towards the corner of your lips in soft sweeping movements. You might also like to use a lip brush instead of your fingers. In that case, keep a lip brush ready at hand.

7.  Now apply the lip stain on your bottom lip; again start from the center and reach the corner of your lip, each at a time.

Lipstick or Lip Stain – How to Remove:

Isn’t this product just what you needed? It just doesn’t come off so easily! It is such a blessing during the day. But what when you want to take it off?  Here are a few ideas to take off either lip stain or lipstick.

    1. Apply a light layer of petroleum jelly on your lips, let it sit for a minute or two and then wipe it off. The stain just glides right off
    2. But if you aren’t a fan of petroleum jelly, then you can also try a cold cream. That works really well too.
    3. Even eye makeup removing pads work quite well.
    4. But if you look at a more homely choice, apply a bit of milk with sugar on it and then follow it up with a tooth brush with some paste on it!
