Waxy Maize Starch for Workout Performance: Is It Worth It?

Question
Dear Lela:

Have you heard of Waxy Maize Starch?

I have been lifting weights for almost 3 years and wonder if this could be a good option to supplement my diet with before/during/after my workouts at the gym.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Roberto

Answer
Roberto,
To be honest, I am not a big supplement taker- I think that most people can get what they need from eating a healthy balanced diet, and that supplements are mostly for the body builder people in the ads selling the supplements- unless you are trying to get a extreme physique, you may not need them.

That being said- You might want an extreme physique. :)

The main benefit of WMS seem to be digestibility- both how quickly it gets into your system and the lack of bloat. If the dextrose/maltose that you are probably taking now causes you gastrointestinal distress, or you just feel wiped out by the insulin spike you can get from the D/M then WMS might be the right supplement for you. Weigh the benefits carefully though, as the WMS tends to cost 2 to 3 times what D/M does.

Hope this helps
