QuestionQUESTION: I have a gold that marked 925 CL. I know 925 means sterling silver but o you have any idea what CL stands for? and I also have one ring that marked IS, anyone know what is IS? thanks
ANSWER: Yes indeed 925 means 925 silver and only means sterling silver when accompanied by the English Lion.
CL or IS your guess is as good as mine. Makers initials are the best bet. they dont mean anything with regard metals.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply. You were saying that if a ring marked 925 it only mean 925 silver but not stearling silver? My ring is actually gold tone.If it mark 925 which mean is 925 silver with gold tone overlay, am i right? And I have one more gold tone ring with a S marked inside the hexagon shape. Do do u know what this marking is? And one more question, do you have a link to show me how the English Lion 925 marking looks like? Thanks a lot!
AnswerIn the UK, pieces not marked with the lion need to be described as whitel metal even if it is the sterling silver recipe.
925 usually is sterling, however it only means that there are 925 parts in 1000 fine silver........
The gold tone is probably oxidation, or it may have been electroplated or even electro fused.
Its really hard to say without viewing the piece in the real.
The hex mark could be anything. It doesnt ring any bells for a specific assay mark.
