Wedding Band Attachment Alternatives to Soldering: Finding the Right Solution

Question
I am about to get married, and my fiance is looking for alternatives to soldering her wedding band to her engagement ring afterward. She said she had heard of some kind of "clip" that would hold the two together (not a wrap or a guard, as it's not a seperate ring, but rather something just meant to hold the two together).
We have searched high and low on the internet and can't find any such thing. I'm sure terminology is the key here, but we don't know what they're called. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Tim

Answer
Tim, the reason I did not answer you question last night is because I was rummaging through boxes and an old work bench stored in the garage.  Looking for:  A device for holding two rings together.  About 20 years ago I had those and sold the item. These were made of either 10k or 14k gold with grooves in a top and bottom piece for the lower part of the ring band(ring shank).  The top was held to the bottom with fine and smooth screws.  Alas, I could not find those items, even if possibly the devices are here somewhere and not just in my memory.

I have used every keyword I can think of and tried to recall a brand name for internet research. The results are zero positive results from many.

These devices did exist some years ago but not a single supplier at my disposal in a jewelry store has these items. Some may remember but no person has seen such on the market for years.  Sorry, I tried and know it was there at one time but is either gone or very, very well hidden from those who want to purchase.

My only other suggestion is to try the "ring guard" wrapped on sort of device. These are made to help a large ring fit a smaller finger but may be wrapped on both ends and the center pressed down to fit and not appreciably change the size.  The result is not that great but it works.

The best option (if she will want to do this) is to have the rings tack soldered at the base with a low temperature gold solder of the right color to match the set.  The solder can be easily remelted to separate the rings and the edges cleaned up with no hint the rings were ever joined in the first place.

Most temporary joining mechanisms, even the screw together on mentioned at the first of this answer will not be the best solution keeping the rings together.  The screw together device depends on having the grooves in lower ring shank match the grooves in the device pretty well. Otherwise, the rings will not fit correctly and can slip. This will also not keep the rings from coming apart a bit when pressure is applied taking the rings off the finger if pulled from the "front" ring.

Yikes, I do wish I could tell you exactly where to get the right jewelry finding (jewlery part) to do the trick without soldering.  Sorry, what I remember and did sell many years ago seems to be off the market.

God Bless and Peace.    Thomas.   August 11, 2006
