Wedding Ring Chipping After Resizing: What to Do?

Question

Wedding band set
I got my wedding ring set resized about a year ago through Samuels Jewelers and found that my ring started chipping. The lady who helped us in the Samuels store said that it was due to air bubbles in the resizing process but then her manager told us that it was not possible so she sent my rings in for an evaluation. When the rings came back they called us over the phone saying that the rings are chipping due to a foreign alloy in the band (saying that its the manufactures fault. After contacting Moissanite Co (where I got my ring from) they said that it was impossible and agreed to work with Samuels to resolve this if we had a written evaluation. After requesting a written evaluation from Samuels they never got back to me and we soon found out that the local Samuels closed down. Even after writing their website twice, no one has replied either. From the looks of the chipping what can the cause be and what can I do in this situation? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Dear Hly,

At this point I see little recourse but to go directly again to the manufacturer.  Explain how contact was made previously and how the store where you purchased the ring has closed and you get absolutely no cooperation from the Samuels Jewelers corporate offices.  You purchased the wedding set with trust in both the jewelers and with the manufacturer. At this point, in all honesty it is up to the manufacturer to assist you in taking care of the obviously damaged or faulty rings.

Considering the evidences shown obviously in your photo the manufacturer truly needs to see this set of rings.  It they are not at fault, then being a vendor to Samuels perhaps they can exert pressure on Samuels to stand up to their responsibilities and not hide behind a closed store, as very well may be happening.

Let Moissanite how very disappointed you are and how you would like to know this is not a manufacturing defect such that you loose faith in their products totally.  They should help.

Quite honestly, this look like one of two things: 1. Metal delaminated and chipped because it has been over worked and stressed one way or the other  2. A quite deep layer of electroplate which was defective and has broken from the surface.

Send a certified letter with return receipt containing all your information including a history of what has happened in trying to obtain satisfaction from Samuels. Include a print of a photo of the damage.  You might e-mail to let them know the letter is in the mail to start bukt be sure to send the body of information by certified mail. Someone must sign for the mail and you have assurance of it being delivered. If they want the rings, which they will, do not let loose of the rings without an assurance from the company in writing that the rings will be returned to you after their examination is completed.

I am not a lawyer but something along this line should start a process to make things right.

Best wishes. God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
