Identifying Vintage Mexican Sterling Silver Rings: Eagle & Initials
Question
pink ring
Hi,
I have quite a bit of old jewelry that I have recently begun to research. There are two rings that I am particularly curious about. The first is a sterling ring stamped mexico, with a #2 eagle, and 3 initials the first is a J I believe but could be a V, the second I think is an M, and the third looks like a T. It may be an F but if it is it's not a typical F, it would be more like a T with another line in the middle. Sorry, it's partially stamped over the M in Mexico. It also has a very large pink stone in a very unique 12 prong setting.
The second ring is, according to a local jeweler, 14k gold with a green tsavorite in a belcher setting that looks to be slightly bigger than 1.1 carats. The only marks on this are four x's.
Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!
AnswerHello Joy and thank you for your inquiry. Without a good visual it would be difficult for me to id your Mexican ring. You might look for a book "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks" by Bille Hougart. This has an extensive listing of hallmarks and assay marks along with pictures and initials. Your local library or bookstore may have a copy. If not, amazon.com could probably get it for you. The second ring I have not been able to identify with the marks "xxxx". It could be that this mark is a design mark and not a manufacturer or it could be European. Sorry I couldn't be of much help on these.
