QuestionHi. I am going to get married but my partner doesn't want to have golden rings. Therefore we decided to have silver rings. but for me, the rings should be something special and i came up with the idea to cast our wedding rings ourselves. i have some experience with bronze casting (arrow-heads, thumb rings for archery) but i don't know anything about silver casting. the main question is, what kind of alloy i should produce (i don't want to buy it). i found on the net, that sterling silver would be an option. what metal should i ad next to copper to give the silver alloy better property for casting?
I was told, that molten silver is VERY liquid and that it tends to produce hollow spaces in the cast object. for obvious reasons i want to avoid that :-)
Thank you for your help, Albert
AnswerHello Albert,
The best silver alloy for this is sterling silver
925 parts fine silver
75 parts pure copper.
You will need to ensure that there are a few breather holes so that the alloy flows, but I'm sure your previous casting experience will be of great assistance to you.
Its very similar to bronze casting only cleaner.
I would read some of my previous answers and would also ensure that you have some powdered borax on hand.....sprinkling this over the molten metal will remove surface oxide and make in shine prior to the pour.
Good Luck, P
