Diamond Cleavage vs. Fracture: Understanding Mineral Breaks

Question
My geology teacher was talking about minerals having cleavage and/or fractures. I asked him if the statement above was true or false and he could not answer me. Can you tell me? Please explain.
Textbook Definitions
Cleavage - The tendency of a mineral to break along planes of weak bonding.
Fracture - Any break or rupture in rock along which no appreciable movement has taken place.

Answer
HI CHELSEA,

DIAMOND HAS 4 DIRECTIONS OF PERFECT CLEAVAGE. DIAMOND ALSO HAS FRACTURES OCASSIONALLY. FRACTURES MAINLY SHOW UP UNDER A MICROSCOPE ON FINISHED DIAMONDS. BUT ARE ALSO FOUND IN NATURE WHEN BEING MINED. SO YOUR STATEMENT IS FALSE. A DIAMOND CAN HAVE BOTH CLEAVAGES AND FRACTURES.

THANKS
